Short answer

SEO usually costs from a few thousand kronor up to SEK 20,000–30,000 a month. The price depends on the competition, the current state of your site and how much you want to rank for. At Skale, local SEO costs from SEK 3,000 a month, ongoing SEO from SEK 5,000 and a full SEO audit from SEK 6,900, excl. VAT.

How much does SEO cost?

Ongoing SEO costs from a few thousand kronor a month up to SEK 20,000–30,000 or more for bigger projects in competitive industries. The difference in price comes down to how much work is needed: from fixing a few important pages and building a foundation, to ongoing work on technology, content, keywords and opportunities across the whole site.

The right budget isn't about buying as much SEO as possible, but about choosing the right level for your situation and your potential.

Click a level to see what's usually included. What changes between the levels is not how “good” the SEO is, but how much can be prioritised and carried out at the same time.

How big an SEO budget does your business need?

The right budget depends on how big the organic opportunity is and how much work it takes to reach it. Choose the option most like you:

Which describes you?
A reasonable levelFrom SEK 3,000/month

Focus on your most important services, the most relevant searches and the improvements that make the biggest difference. With us, local SEO starts at SEK 3,000 a month.

The budget is driven by how big the organic opportunity is and how much work it takes to reach it, not by how big the business is.

A bigger budget only helps if there are enough relevant opportunities to spend it on.

How is SEO priced?

Agencies and consultants charge in four ways:

For ongoing SEO and long-term growth. Priorities can change as new data comes in.

Suits most businesses
Defined scopeFixed project price

For defined projects: an audit, a site migration, keyword research or a set number of pages.

One-off
FlexibleHourly rate

For advice, specialist work or smaller, one-off tasks. It can be harder to link the cost to a clear long-term SEO result if the work consists only of the occasional hour.

Requires clear, measurable goals tied to real business value. Ranking for lots of keywords is worth little if they don't bring relevant traffic or business.

Be careful

What affects the price of SEO?

Six things decide how much work is needed, and so what SEO costs for you.

The competitionTwo keywords with the same search volume can take completely different amounts of work.
Your site's current stateA site with good technology and positions starts from a different place.
Number of servicesMore business areas mean more search intentsGlossarySearch intentWhat the searcher wants: to learn, compare, buy or find a specific company.Read more in the glossary and pages to work on.
Existing contentIf the right pages already exist, the work is about improving them.
Technical complexityLarge sites and webshops need more work on indexing and structure.
How much is done at onceA bigger budget means more work in parallel, if there are opportunities to spend it on.
Deep diveHow each factor affects the price
  • The competition: stronger competitors usually require better landing pagesGlossaryLanding pageThe page a customer lands on after clicking your ad.Read more in the glossary, broader topic coverage, stronger internal linkingGlossaryInternal linkingLinks between the pages on your own site, which show Google what belongs together.Read more in the glossary and more ongoing work.
  • Your site's current state: the biggest gain may come from improving pages that already rank, or from first fixing technical problems and the information architecture.
  • Number of services or product areas: a few clear services make it possible to work in a focused way. Visibility across many business areas means more search intents, landing pages and topics to analyse.
  • Existing content: more content isn't automatically better SEO. If important pages are missing, new landing pages or supporting content may need to be built.
  • Technical complexity: small sites often need little technical SEO. Large webshops, sites with many URLs or complex platforms can need a lot of work on indexing, crawling, canonical tags, redirects and structure. Read more in Technical SEO.
  • How much is done in parallel: a bigger budget means more priority work at the same time, but the biggest budget isn't automatically the best. The right budget matches the number of relevant opportunities.

SEO prices in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö or Halmstad

Many people search for SEO prices in their own city. But the price isn't driven by the city, it's driven by how tough the competition is for the searches you want to rank for. In the big cities competition is often harder, so more work is needed. A niche service in a smaller city can reach page 1 with a smaller budget.

StockholmOften high competition
GothenburgOften high competition
MalmöMedium
UppsalaMedium
LundMedium
HalmstadOften lower competition
KarlskronaOften lower competition
KirunaOften lower competition

A simplified example. Competition depends on the industry and the keyword, not just the city.

SEO can be done remotely. We’re an SEO agency in Halmstad with clients across Sweden. If you have a physical office in a city, local SEO and your Google Business Profile matter even more.

What the first 90 days of SEO can look like

Month 1Analysis, prioritisation and groundwork
  • Where you stand in Google and which pages already appear
  • Keyword and competitor research
  • Technical review, indexing and structure
  • Pages close to better positions

  • Stronger internal linkingGlossaryInternal linkingLinks between the pages on your own site, which show Google what belongs together.Read more in the glossary and technical fixes
  • Pages competing for the same search are merged
  • New pages where an important search intent has no page

  • Strengthen pages that are climbing, adjust where progress is slow
  • Plan the next content or page area
  • Decide whether to scale up

Read more about the first step in our guide to keyword research. 90 days gives direction and data, but rarely enough to judge the full business impact. How fast it goes depends on the competition, your site’s history and current state, and how big the effort is. The first results usually show after 2–4 months.

Does SEO pay off? Here's how to work it out

Start with what a new customer is worth. If a customer is worth SEK 20,000 and you need four qualified enquiries to win one customer, each enquiry is worth about SEK 5,000. Try it with your own numbers:

Work it out for your business
What is a new customer worth to you?
What share of enquiries become customers?

Worked example. SEO should be judged over several months, not month by month.

Measure more than positions

  • Organic clicks from relevant searches
  • Visibility for commercial keywords
  • Traffic to the landing pagesGlossaryLanding pageThe page a customer lands on after clicking your ad.Read more in the glossary
  • Enquiries and sales, and which pages create business

A single month says little. What matters is whether organic trafficGlossaryOrganic trafficVisitors who come from the regular search results, not from ads.Read more in the glossary and enquiries grow in relation to the effort.

SEO or Google Ads: where should the budget go?

SEOVisibility that builds up
  • When the same relevant searches come back year after year
  • When you can wait a few months for results
  • The traffic costs nothing per click
Google AdsEnquiries now
  • When you need customers right away
  • When launching a new site or service
  • To test demand before a bigger SEO investment

The combination is often stronger than choosing between them. Ads can bring enquiries while SEO grows, and ad data shows which searches and pages bring customers. Compare the cost per deal, not per click. BR&K went from no digital presence to SEK 342,000 in signed deals in five weeks. Read more in How much does it cost to advertise on Google Ads?

If SEK 10,000 spent on advertising generates more profitable deals than the same investment in SEO, advertising is probably the right priority for now. If SEO, on the other hand, can build organic visibility that keeps generating relevant leads over time, the long-term calculation can look entirely different.

When is SEO not worth the money?

There's almost no search demandIf few people search for what you offer, SEO has limited potential. Ads, social media or direct sales may work better.
Your site can't turn visitors into customersMore traffic doesn't help if the site doesn't bring enquiries or sales. Fix that first.
You need results right awayPaid channels like Google Ads bring traffic faster. A combination is often best.
The business value doesn't justify the competitionSome search results are so competitive, or margins so low, that the visibility costs more than it brings in.
You can't make the changesPaying for audits and recommendations that never get implemented is rarely a good investment.
There's no business caseWanting to "rank higher on Google" isn't enough. Sometimes the best advice is not to invest more in SEO right now.

Ask what a better organic position could realistically be worth to the company, not just whether you can rank for the keyword.

Red flags when buying SEO

Guaranteed rankingsNo one controls Google's results. Promises of top positions are a warning sign.
Focus on the number of keywordsRanking for 500 keywords says little if the keywords aren't relevant to the business.
Unclear what's being doneYou should be able to see which pages, technical fixes and copy have changed, and why.
Content to fill a quotaCopy written to deliver a number, not to meet a real need.
Links no one will explainYou should know where links come from, how relevant they are and which sites they are.
No link to the businessGood SEO ties in with your customers, the valuable searches, the pages that sell and how success is measured.

Google also advises caution with SEO providers who promise specific rankings, and recommends checking SEO advice against Google’s own guidelines.

Frequently asked questions

What many people ask.

How much does SEO cost per month?

From a few thousand kronor up to SEK 20,000–30,000 or more for bigger projects. With us, local SEO costs from SEK 3,000 and ongoing SEO from SEK 5,000 a month, excl. VAT.

How much should a small business spend on SEO?

There's no figure that suits everyone. SEK 3,000–5,000 a month can be a reasonable start for a business with few services and clear opportunities, as long as it covers the essentials.

Can you buy SEO as a one-off?

Yes, for example an audit, a technical review, keyword research or optimising your most important pages. To build visibility over time, ongoing work is usually better.

Is cheap SEO bad?

Not automatically. Problems arise when a low price comes with promises of lots of copy or links that can't be delivered with quality.

How long does SEO take to work?

There's no fixed timeline. Some changes work quickly, while competitive areas take longer. The first results usually show after 2–4 months.

How much does local SEO cost?

It depends on how many locations you compete in, how strong the competition is and what your site looks like today. With us, local SEO starts at SEK 3,000 a month.

Does SEO cost different amounts in different cities?

Not because of the city itself. The price is driven by the competition for the searches you want to rank for, and it's often tougher in the big cities.

Can I do SEO myself?

Parts of it, like content, page titles, internal links and Search Console, can be learned. An agency or consultant suits best when things need to move fast, require advanced analysis or when you don't have the time.

How do I know which SEO budget suits my business?

Start with the organic business potential, the competition and what needs improving on your site, not with how much you can spend.
