In short
Upload images in the right proportions and at a higher resolution than the minimum size: square (1:1) for profile pictures, product images and the square logo, landscape for cover images and 2:1 for the rectangular logo. Keep the important content in the centre, as images are cropped differently on mobile and desktop.
Introduction to image sizes for your brand
Using the right image dimensions makes a real difference to how professional your brand looks – whether you are posting on free platforms such as social media or running paid ads. This guide shows the sizes you need to know now – from profile and cover images to posts and ads across different platforms.
What do the free channels cover?
By “free” we mean the channels where you can post images without an ad budget: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and other social media, for example. Getting the sizes right for these is fundamental to a strong visual presence, and good visuals lead to higher engagement and better reach.

Profile pictures & cover images
Profile picture
The profile picture is usually the very first visual impression a visitor gets of your page or channel. It is shown as a circle or a square depending on the platform, so the central part of the image must be clear and free of important information in the corners. Make sure the files you upload have a higher resolution than the smallest displayed size, so the image looks sharp on both mobile and desktop.

Cover image
The cover image is the large horizontal image at the top of your page or profile, and it gives your brand the chance to make a powerful first impression. As it is displayed differently on desktop and mobile, it is especially important to centre the key elements (logo, tagline, images) and keep them well away from the edges.

Instagram posts, stories and reels
Instagram shows posts in a portrait format. Since January 2025, the profile grid has been displayed in 3:4 rather than squares, so keep the important content in the centre of the image.

Image sizes for your Shopify store
Using the right image dimensions in your Shopify store makes a huge difference to how professional and polished your website feels. The right proportions and format affect more than the design – they also affect load times, user experience and how well your products stand out.
In this guide we go through the key dimensions you need to know for Shopify – from product images and collections to banners and slideshows.
Product images & collections – start here
Product images
Product images in your Shopify store should show the product as clearly and neutrally as possible. Avoid backgrounds, text and graphic elements – let the product speak for itself. A simple white or light background makes colours and details stand out and gives the whole store a consistent, professional feel. Place the product in the centre of the frame and leave some space around it, so nothing is cropped automatically.
Product image sizes at a glance
| Property | Shopify product image dimensions |
|---|---|
| Minimum | 800×800 px |
| Recommended | 1024×1024 px |
| Maximum | 2048×2048 px |
| File format | PNG |
| File size | As small as possible without visible loss of quality |
| Upload format | Square (1:1) |
| Displayed as | Square |
Shopify collection dimensions
A collection’s cover image works as the shop window of your store – it sets the tone for the whole category. Choose an image that clearly represents the products in the collection, with a simple composition and natural light. Avoid text, logos or graphic elements in the image – the focus should be on the products. As the image is cropped differently on desktop and mobile, place the most important parts of the subject in the centre, with plenty of space around the edges.

Image sizes for Google Merchant Center
The images in your product feed are often the first thing a customer sees – and in Google Merchant Center they decide whether you get the click. With the right format, cropping and background, you make sure your products look their best in Google Shopping.
Here we cover everything you need to know about image requirements, recommended dimensions and how to optimise for maximum visibility.
Company logos
Square logo
The square logo is mainly used when your ads appear on larger screens – so it needs to look clear, sharp and professional in every detail. Use a version with no background, or with neutral contrast, so the logo stands out whatever the background colour. Avoid small details or thin lines that can disappear at smaller sizes – keep it simple, recognisable and consistent with the rest of your brand identity.
Square logo sizes at a glance
| Property | Google Merchant Center square logo dimensions |
|---|---|
| Minimum | 500×500 px |
| Recommended | 2000×2000 px |
| Maximum | 2000×2000 px |
| File format | PNG, WEBP, SVG |
| File size | Max 5 MB |
| Upload format | Square (1:1) |
| Displayed as | Square |

Rectangular logo
The rectangular logo is mainly used in Google Merchant Center when ads appear on smaller screens, where space is more limited. Make sure the logo is clear and well proportioned even in a compact format – a version that is too wide or too detailed can quickly become hard to read. Use a simple, horizontal version of the logo that works well alongside the square one and keeps the brand feel consistent.
Rectangular logo sizes at a glance
| Property | Google Merchant Center rectangular logo dimensions |
|---|---|
| Minimum | 1000×500 px |
